Ken Wilber's Integral Theory

Ken Wilber's Integral Theory

Integral theory, created by Ken Wilber, is a philosophical map that brings together more than 100 ancient and contemporary theories in philosophy, psychology, etc.

Instead of “the one correct view,” it presents a framework for understanding and valuing the perspective of each theory.

Integrative Quadrants

The integral theory describes that all life conditions are filtered through 4 irreducible perspectives that come from one of “inside versus outside” & “singular versus plural” perspectives:

  • The “I” — the individual’s first-person subjective experience (consciousness)
  • The “We” — the social perspective—the inside of the collective intersubjective realm (values, culture)
  • The “It” — the third-person perspective (scientific approach).
  • The “Its” —external (ecological) structures (social & political systems)
