As of 2023, only 48% of employees consider their organization's leadership to be high-quality, mostly due to the lack of investment in leadership-building initiatives. This doesn't mean it's impossible to be an <a href="https://www.entrepreneur.com/leadership/5-essential-traits-leaders-should-embody/354127">impactful leader</a> . With the right training and dedication, CEOs can polish these qualities and improve their rank as a leader.

Leadership is a vital skill

CEOs are responsible for setting the direction and long-term goals of their organization. A key leadership quality, therefore, is the ability to think big and envision the future. To have a clear and compelling vision of where they want to take the company, leaders must be ambitious, imaginative and unafraid to take risks. At the same time, they must be able to plan realistically based on given circumstances and understand that turning vision into reality is a step-by-step process.

1. Visionary thinking

Business leaders are responsible for making strategic decisions that will guide their organization toward success. This means that they must be able to analyze complex information, weigh the pros and cons of various options and make decisions that are in the best interest of the company. Strategic decision-making is a crucial leadership quality that requires a combination of analytical skills, business acumen and emotional intelligence.

As the leader, you can benefit from this feedback loop by practicing both 1:1 and 1:many communication habits, while learning how to appropriately respond to both positive and negative feedback. The communication loop that results from an open dialogue is sure to prompt stronger relationships and improved business performance.

5. Effective communication

Accountability is a trait that becomes more effective when cascaded from the top down, so it must start with the leader. How did you feel when you first started learning something? When I started learning to code, I was interested, but also incredibly frustrated at the errors that would pop up because of my inexperience.However, pushing through those bugs and learning from my mistakes also taught me the most—more than any tutorial video. Resistance is normal. If there’s no resistance, there’s no growth.

😵‍💫 Expect (a lot of) resistance

When you’re consistent, you get used to it.When you get used to it, you feel less resistance.When you feel less resistance, it becomes more enjoyable.When it becomes more enjoyable, you'd start to do more and make more progress.

📈 Compound with Consistency

Don't dig up and kill the seedling you've planted just to see if its roots are growing.Put in the work. Evaluate regularly to see if you're nearing your checkpoints. But don't doubt yourself and your ability to grow.Results don't show up overnight.

They aren't fazed by failure, which allows them to experience multiple successes (bites) after a setback. 3 Career Lessons from a Mosquito

Working with <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/10/25/types-of-difficult-people-and-why-passive-aggressive-is-worst-of-all-according-to-harvard-expert.html">difficult personalities </a>can dampen our ability to think clearly and make sound decisions. As a <a href="https://learntoloveyourwork.com/">leadership consultant </a>who studies workplace psychology, I've spent more than 30 years helping thousands of individuals and teams at multimillion-dollar organizations navigate tough relationships. And through my research, I've found that insecure people are often the most difficult to deal with.

7 Signs Of Highly Insecure People

While feeling insecure is natural, problematic behaviors can develop when people consistently attempt to conceal or compensate for their self-doubt. Insecure types are extremely risk averse and unproductive. Some can be downright nasty or display abusive behaviors.

Why highly insecure types can be so challenging

Here are their most common toxic behaviors, according to <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Getting-Along-Anyone-Difficult-People/dp/1647821061">Harvard career expert Amy Gallo </a>: <ol><li>They are overly concerned about what others think of them. </li><li>They never express a firm opinion. </li><li>They suffer from a chronic inability to make decisions, even when the choices have little consequence. </li><li>They frequently try to change the direction of projects and meetings. </li><li>They put other people down to make themselves look more important. </li><li>They constantly talk about how busy they are (when they're actually not) to show that they are in demand. </li><li>They are paranoid meddlers who make you question your every move. </li> </ol>

Common Toxic Behaviors

Insecure types — whether in the form of a team member or boss — are all around us, so it's important to know how to deal with them efficiently. The first step is to activate your detective mindset. Turn interacting with insecure people into a learning opportunity.

How to handle insecure people

Count the interactions you've had with the insecure person. How many have been bad? All? Half? Less than a third? You've now answered the most important question: How big is the problem? If you have more good interactions than bad, maybe the person is not that difficult.

1. Assess the size of the problem.

Think about the negative interactions you've had with them. What topics tend to bring them on? How do you each express yourselves in these situations? Now think about the good interactions. What is different?

2. Identify the root causes of the problem.

Prime your mind to host positive thoughts and have their best interest in mind. One approach I like to use is to remind myself that the that the person is somebody's child. I ask myself: "Would I like someone to have similar negative thoughts about my kids or loved ones?"

3. Cultivate genuine compassion.

A lack of one-on-one syndication is one reason why strategies fail in companies. Have a casual meeting with them or suggest a coffee break. Use this as a forum to get to know them.

4. Over-invest in 1:1s.

Focus on how the outcome of this interaction can create value for the other person. Ask yourself: "What would be a helpful result for them, and what reaction would I like to get?"

5. Have an exciting outcome in mind.

Insecure people have a tendency to see gaps in arguments, so structure how you communicate with them in this order: <ol><li>This is what I am certain about... </li><li>This is what I believe, but am not certain about... </li><li>This is what I know too little about to have a view on... </li> </ol>

6. Be transparent in how you communicate.

Insecure people feel more secure when they have a strong sense of ownership. Structure the work in a series of one-on-ones where both of you should have things to prepare for each meeting.

7. Fill in the gaps  — together!
