A singularity is defined as <a href="http://fourminutebooks.com/the-singularity-is-near-summary/">a moment in which nothing is defined and everything is unpredictable </a>. It’s a massive inflection point. When scientists talk about <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Initial_singularity">the “initial” singularity </a>, they refer to the moment the universe was created. It’s hard to imagine, but think of a little, compact point, that is infinitely dense – it contains everything that’s in the universe now, but is compressed into a tiny, tiny dot.

Lesson 1: All it took to create most of the universe 

All of a sudden, it explodes , splattering all of its contents into the void. This moment is known as <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Bang">the big bang </a>. When it happened, the entire universe was created in the time it takes you to prepare a sandwich . Immediately after the blow, the universe doubled in size every 10-34  seconds – that’s FAST. Within three minutes , 98% of all matter in the universe we know today was created.

With all this expanding, how wide is the universe today? About 100 billion light years – that’s the distance light can travel in a year times 100 BILLION. And <a href="http://fourminutebooks.com/einstein-his-life-and-universe-summary/">light is fast </a>. It travels 300,000 km (or 186,000 miles) per second . That’s this much in a year: 9,460,800,000,000 or about 9.5 trillion.

So 9.5 trillion times 100 billion, that’s the diameter of the universe. In numbers (whatever that means), that’s the span in kilometers: 946,800,000,000,000,000,000,000.

If you think about how easy it is to die, it becomes clear how frail human life actually is. I mean, you fall down a couple stairs, hit your head, and that’s it. You dive too deep in the sea, climb too high on a mountain or get stung by the wrong plant or insect, and you’re done. But an even bigger surprise than us managing to maneuver the dangerous world we live in every day is the fact that we’re here at all .

Lesson 2: The odds of a planet supporting life are low

99.5% of earth’s habitable space is not suited for humans – because it’s either water or doesn’t have enough oxygen . We need land to move and live and even on land we’re limited: only 12% of the total land mass of our planet can host humans.

It’s pretty rare for a planet to be livable on in general, because several things have to come together: <ol><li>The distance to a star must be perfect. If it’s too close, the surface burns, if it’s too far away, the planet will be iced over. </li><li>The planet has to keep out cosmic radiation by building the right atmosphere. </li><li>A moon has to keep the planet’s gravity in check, so that it can spin at the right speed and angle. </li><li>All of these events have to line up in the right order and timeline. </li> </ol>

Let’s reconsider the point above. Humans not falling prey to all the dangers in the world pales in comparison to all the dangers that threaten earth’s existence from the outside. There are around 1,000,000,000 asteroids flying around space close to the earth, and about 10% of them that regularly intersect with earth’s orbit are larger than 10 meters in diameter. That’s 100 million 10m-sized rocks potentially hitting earth at tremendous speeds!

Lesson 3: There’s a lot that could go wrong for our planet

In fact, 2,000 of those are so large that upon collision, we might get wiped out completely . According to scientists calculations, those deadly asteroids could fly by and nearly miss around 2-3 times a week – without us even noticing. As if that wasn’t enough, there are earthquakes, tornados and volcano eruptions, all of which can have devastating consequences. So no, it’s totally not normal that the sun rises every morning. Every single day is yet another miracle, waiting for you to appreciate it and take advantage of it. Live like it!

Tolle first describes that all religions already accept pain, chaos, madness and suffering as part of life in one form or the other . Therefore, religion can’t possibly solve the problem. Buddhism, for example, mentions dukkha as the mind’s natural state, which translates to suffering or pain. If you translate “sin” from its original, Greek source, it comes out to “missing the mark.” Thus, Christianity also has its own bucket for those, who are lost causes and just miss the point. Hinduism integrates death and rebirth into a perpetual cycle of pain and relief.

Lesson 1: Religion won’t help us save the world

You see, turning to religion, no matter which one, can’t possibly truly liberate us. Most of these problems with religion have emerged over time, because as religions grew older, their messages have been twisted, changed and distorted, making them part of the problem, instead of the solution. Just think of the Crusades, Spanish Inquisition, or the <a href="http://fourminutebooks.com/start-up-nation-summary/">Israel </a>i-Palestinian conflict.

Tolle uses a cool Zen story to make this point. Tanzan and Ekido, two Buddhist monks, travel along a muddy road, while heavy rain is falling. They spot a beautiful woman in a kimono, who’s unable to cross an intersection, because of the bad weather. Tanzan picks her up and carries her to the other side, setting her down. They travel on for hours, and only when they reach their destination at night does Ekido speak about what’s been bothering him the entire time: “We monks aren’t allowed near females, so why did you do that?”

Lesson 2: Overthinking is detrimental, so be like a duck.

Tanzan replies: “I left the girl there. Are you still carrying her?” So simple, but perfectly makes the point. Tolle compares someone, who doesn’t overthink, to a duck. When ducks fight, they quickly swim in opposite directions afterwards, immediately moving on with their lives. Only humans feel compelled to collect bad feelings, resentment, hurt and suffering over time and then unleash it upon the world.  Don’t be like Ekido. Don’t carry things with you longer than you need to. Be like a duck.

So here’s the solution Tolle proposes: Accept every moment as it is.Do whatever you have to do in any given moment, but do it peacefully, without judgement and keep an open mind. Not all tasks are great, not all days will be wonderful, but once you simply accept what you’re doing, you take responsibility for your own state of mind and can find enjoyment in the present.

Lesson 3: You can live an enlightened life

The more you seek to find this enjoyment in your life, the more it’ll become your <a href="http://fourminutebooks.com/motivational-books/">source of motivation </a>for doing things, instead of a desire for some material thing or other peoples’ approval. Always acting out of pure enjoyment is what Tolle describes as enlightenment, and acceptance is the only way to get there.

I think <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/76334.A_New_Earth">A New Earth </a> was even more successful than Tolle’s first one is that it works with the concepts he previously described, but places them in a much larger context. Not only are his ideas about living in the present the key to your own happiness, but they just might help us all make the world a better place. I’d suggest you read the free preview on Amazon and then make up your mind. Tolle is known for being a complicated read, so the blinks might help you understand this book a lot better and thus make a good supplemental read.

There has been considerable research on how body language, particularly <a href="https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20190108-why-meeting-anothers-gaze-is-so-powerful">those coming from eye contact </a>, affects our behavior. It's actually quite astounding just how powerful eye contact can be.  Eye contact is so important that science has actually been studying it for many years and they continue to find out more about just how powerful it is. The eyes can give away so much and when we make eye contact with someone, it can have an impact on how we view that person.

We can even make assumptions about someone's personality, or even what they could be thinking based on the way that they make eye contact with us. Here are 5 interesting results:

Staring directly into someone’s eyes causes an arousal reaction. How that arousal is interpreted, however, depends on the parties involved and the circumstances. Being stared at by a stranger who appears large or ominous can be seen as a threat and elicit a fear response. This is common in social animals. A direct stare from a human to a dog or an ape can be interpreted as a threat from the large (and strange) human.

Eye contact has also been found to be <a href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0887618508000972">somewhat linked to social anxiety </a>. Lesson 3: Seek meaning through sacrifice, not happiness through pleasure.

Peterson says this is a great coping mechanism, because it helps balance your life between drowning in hedonism and being so righteous it drives you mad. Of course not all sacrifices are equal.
