Working On Another Project

Make the connection for your boss not just to how this project aligns with team or company goals, but how it’ll make you a more valuable employee. What skills will you develop? What relationships will you build? What discoveries could you make? See if anyone else can advocate for you, someone who needs the new project done on time!

Making A Convincing Case

If you can show it’ll be good for them (and not just good for yourself), you’re more likely to get their stamp of approval. An email can do the initial trick. Prepare for and address any concerns they may have. What are the counterarguments to getting this project up? How will you defend yourself when they say they’re worried about it taking up too much of your time? Or, conflicting with your other responsibilities? Or, requiring them to manage you more?

Approaching Your Boss

There is no guarantee your manager will say yes—even if you did all your homework, even if you made a solid case, even if other people back you up. Your boss has the final say on what you work on, and it’s possible this project would conflict with their expectations for the future.If you get a no, staying positive and professional may convince your boss to reconsider your request down the road. Here are some phrases to try: <ul><li>“I understand why you disagree with this and appreciate you explaining further.”</li><li>“I wasn’t aware of those changes and am glad you brought them to my attention.”</li></ul>

How to Ask to Work on Another Team's Project

We live in a world where every conversation can turn into an argument. Pew Research found that we are more polarised, more divided than we have ever been in history. It means we are not listening to each other.  A conversation requires talking and listening, and somewhere we have lost the balance between them. In the 21st century, it's more important to sustain coherent, confident conversations. We might not like the person or might deeply disagree with them, but we should still be able to have a great conversation with them.

The art of conversation

Be present in that moment.
Don't look at your cellphone. Don't think about what you're having for dinner. If you want out of the conversation, then get out, but don't be half in half out.

Don't multitask

Enter every conversation assuming you have something to learn as everybody is an expert in something. A true conversation means setting aside your personal opinion. In sensing this acceptance, the speaker will become less vulnerable and more willing to open up.

Don't pontificate

Start your questions with who, what, when, where, why or how.
For example, instead of asking "Were you terrified?", which will produce a "yes" or "no" answer, try asking, "How did that feel?" They might have to think about it, but you'll get a much better response.

Use open-ended questions

We may listen to someone who talks for several minutes, and then thoughts will pop into your mind and draw your attention away from the conversation. Stories and ideas will come to you, but you need to let them come and let them go.

Go with the flow

People on the radio are more aware that they're going on the record and will be more careful about what they claim to be an expert in. Do the same. Err on the side of caution.

If you don't know, say that you don't know

If they're talking about losing a loved one, don't start talking about the time you lost a loved one. If they talk about the trouble at work, don't tell them about your own troubles at work. It's not the same. The conversation is not about you. You don't need to prove how amazing you are or how much you've suffered.

Don't equate your experience with theirs

It's condescending. It's boring. Yet we all tend to do it a lot, especially in work conversations or with our kids. We have a point to make that we keep rehashing. Don't do it.

Try not to repeat yourself

People don't care about the little details you struggle to remember. The names, dates, years, they don't care. What they care about is you. What you're like, what you have in common.

Stay out of the weeds

The ability to really listen is perhaps the most important skill you could develop.
Why don't we listen?

<li>We like to rather talk because when we talk, we're in control. We don't have to listen to anything we're not interested in.</li>
<li>We get distracted. We can listen to 500 words per minute, yet the average person talks at about 225 words per minute. So our minds fill in the other 275 words.</li>
</ul>

A good conversation is brief enough to retain interest but long enough to cover the subject.

Trust is the foundation for everything we do. If we can learn to trust one another, we can make great strides in human progress. But if trust is broken, and we're going to rebuild it, it is helpful to understand its various parts.

Build on trust

<ul><li>Authenticity. If you sense that someone is being authentic, you are more likely to trust them.</li><li>Logic. You are more likely to trust if you sense real rigour in logic.</li><li>Empathy. If you believe that empathy is directed towards you, you are more likely to trust them.</li></ul>When just one of these three is broken, trust is threatened.

What creates trust

People don't believe that we're mostly in it for them and they believe that we are too self-distracted. With so many demands on our time, we often lack the time and space that empathy requires. Remedy: Identify where, when and to whom you're likely to offer your distraction. This is when, where, and to whom you are likely to withhold your empathy. In those instances, put away your phone, look at them and listen to them.

Lack of empathy is the most common trust-breaker

There are two forms of logic wobbles.<ol><li>The quality of your logic.</li><li>Your ability to communicate the logic.</li></ol>Remedy for accurately communicating logic: Instead of telling a story with twists and turns and then getting to the point, start with a half-point and give supporting evidence. This way, people can still access your ideas, but you get credit for it even if you get cut off mid-way.

Logic wobbles

If we hold back on who we are, we're less likely to be trusted, less likely to be given stretch assignments, less likely to be promoted, and so on. Remedy:<ul><li>Pay more attention to your authentic self and less to what you think people want to hear from you.</li><li>Set the conditions that make it safe to be authentic, then celebrate who you are.</li><li>Cherish it for what it is.</li></ul>

The Four Levels of Reading

The goal of reading determines how you read. Reading the latest Danielle Steel novel is not the same as reading Plato. If you’re reading for entertainment or information, you’re going to read a lot differently (and likely different material) than reading to increase understanding. While many people are proficient in reading for information and entertainment, few improve their ability to read for knowledge.

How You Read Matches Why You’re Reading

This is the level of reading taught in our elementary schools. If you’re reading this website, you already know how to do this.

1. Elementary Reading

We’ve been taught that skimming and superficial reading are bad for understanding. That is not necessarily the case. Using these tools effectively can increase understanding. Inspectional reading allows us to look at the author’s blueprint and evaluate the merits of a deeper reading experience.Inspectional reading gives you the gist of things.There are two sub-types of inspectional reading.

2. Inspectional Reading

This is meant to be a quick check of the book by 1) reading the preface; 2) studying the table of contents; 3) checking the index; and 4) reading the inside jacket. This should give you sufficient knowledge to understand the chapters in the book, pivotal to the author’s argument. Dip in here and there, but never with more than a paragraph or two. Skimming helps you reach to a decision point: Does this book deserve more of my time and attention? If not, you put it down.

2.1 Systematic Skimming

This is when you just read. Don’t ponder the argument, don’t look things up, don’t write in the margins. If you don’t understand something, move on. What you gain from this quick read will help you later when you go back and put more effort into reading. You now come to another decision point. Now that you have a better understanding of the book’s contents and its structure, do you want to understand it?

2.2 Superficial reading

Francis Bacon once remarked, “some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested.”You can think of analytical reading as doing that chewing and digesting. This is doing the work.Analytical reading is a thorough reading.If inspectional reading is the best reading you can do quickly, analytical reading is the best reading you can do given time. There are 4 rules to analytical reading.

3. Analytical Reading

<ol><li>Classify the book according to kind and subject matter.</li><li>State what the whole book is about with the utmost brevity.</li><li>Enumerate its major parts in their order and relation, and outline these parts as you have outlined the whole.</li><li>Define the problem or problems the author is trying to solve.</li></ol>

The 4 Rules To Analytical Reading

You’ll probably notice that while the rules above sound pretty easy, they involve a lot of work. Luckily the inspectional reading you’ve already done has primed you for this.After an inspectional read, you will understand the book and the author’s views.But that doesn’t mean you’ll understand the broader subject. To do that, you need to use syntopical reading to synthesize knowledge from several books on the same subject.

A First Look At How The Levels Come Together

This is also known as comparative reading, and it represents the most demanding and difficult reading of all. Syntopical Reading involves reading many books on the same subject and comparing and contrasting ideas, vocabulary, and arguments.This task is undertaken by identifying relevant passages, translating the terminology, framing and ordering the questions that need answering, defining the issues, and having a conversation with the responses.The goal is not to achieve an overall understanding of any particular book, but rather to understand the subject and develop a deep fluency.

4. Syntopical Reading

There are 5 steps to syntopical reading:<ol><li>Finding the Relevant Passages</li><li>Bringing the Author to Terms</li><li>Getting the Questions Clear</li><li>Defining the Issues</li><li>Analyzing the Discussion</li></ol>

The 5 Steps To Syntopical Reading

You need to find the right books and then the passages that are most relevant to filling your needs. So the first step is an inspectional reading of all the works that you have identified as relevant.

1. Finding the Relevant Passages

In analytical reading, you must identify the keywords and how they are used by the author. This is fairly straightforward. The process becomes more complicated now as each author has probably used different terms and concepts to frame their argument. Now the onus is on you to establish the terms. Rather than using the author’s language, you must use your own. In short, this is an exercise in translation and synthesis.

2. Bringing the Author to Terms

Rather than focus on the problems the author is trying to solve, you need to focus on the questions that you want answered. Just as we must establish our own terminology, so too must we establish our own propositions by shedding light on our problems to which the authors provide answers. It’s important to frame the questions in such a way that all or most of the authors can be interpreted as providing answers. Sometimes we might not get an answer to our questions because they might not have been seen as questions by the authors.

3. Getting The Questions Clear

If you’ve asked a clear question to which there are multiple answers then an issue has been defined. Opposing answers, now translated into your terms, must be ordered in relation to one another. Understanding multiple perspectives within an issue helps you form an intelligent opinion.

4. Defining the Issues 

It’s presumptuous to expect we’ll find a single unchallenged truth to any of our questions. Our answer is the conflict of opposing answers. The value is the discussion you have with these authors. You can now have an informed opinion.

5. Analyzing the Discussion

Reading is all about asking the right questions in the right order and seeking answers.There are 4 main questions you need to ask of every book:<ol><li>What is this book about?</li><li>What is being said in detail, and how?</li><li>Is this book true in whole or in part?</li><li>What of it?</li></ol>***
