We use 3 cognitive processes while programming or reading code:<ul><li>Long-term memory (LTM) is similar to the hard drive of the brain. It stores the things that we have learned in the past, such as syntax or an algorithm.</li><li>Short-term memory (STM) is like the RAM or cache memory. We use it to remember the things we have just seen, such as the type of a variable or a function name.</li><li>Working memory is the CPU of the brain. This is what we use for thoughts, ideas, and coming up with solutions while programming.</li></ul>

Cognitive Processes 

In an experiment, both chess masters and average players were asked to memorize a chess board configuration, and the chess masters did way better. That was because the experts had previously seen something similar, and they only had to store a few items in their STM, such as “Sicilian opening with a knight moved to D4”. The average players were trying to memorize the whole board. Research showed that we can only hold around 7 items in our STM.When they ran the experiment with a configuration with pieces arranged completely random, the chess masters did just as bad as the average players.

A Chess Experiment

The way the chess experiment applies to programming is that we should aim to split our code into chunks that make it more readable and easier to remember.We can achieve this by using design patterns and comments. If a function’s name is enough to describe what it does, then a comment is not necessary. But sometimes a comment is needed to increase code readability.

Chunking Code

Active elaboration is the process of thinking about similar things when learning a new concept. This helps strengthen the concept in memory.In the context of programming, you can think about similar concepts in another programming language or if the concept fits a certain paradigm, framework, or domain.

Since code is similar to natural language, we can apply the same techniques that we use to understand text to understand a piece of code. A great way is to try to summarize the piece of code in words, which helps you understand it better and can serve as documentation.

It is pretty obvious that the names of variables matter. But oftentimes when we are in the middle of a hard problem, thinking about the name of a variable is too much for our cognitive capacity, so we just choose the first thing that comes to mind.But we can increase our naming abilities while reviewing other people’s code. When you see one of their variables for the first time, take a few seconds to try to predict what it will be used for, and later evaluate how accurate its name was. Overtime, this should increase your intuition about good variable names.

A good name must fit the natural language the variables are defined in. For example, since in English you would say “the maximum number of points”, it makes more sense to choose the name max_points over points_max.Also, the aim should be to use 2-4 words per variable (apart from the common 1 word names).

Since we can only hold a few things at once in our memory, this can slow us down while programming or while reading code. There are 2 strategies we can use.<ol><li>Automatization: Practice a concept so much that it becomes second nature. If you’ve been programming for a while, you never think about the syntax of a for-loop, so that does not take almost any brain power while writing code.</li><li>Making models: a model is an abstraction you make to reduce your cognitive load, such as a diagram about a complicated codebase that helps you understand it better.</li></ol>

Using Memory To Your Advantage

One of the things I take away from this book is that confusion and feeling cognitively overwhelmed is fine, and is part of life and learning. Before I knew all I know about cognition, I used to get upset with myself for not being smart enough to read complicated papers or explore unfamiliar code; now I can be kinder to myself and say, “Well, maybe you have too much cognitive load.”

3. Acceptance of Fate

Don’t seek for everything to happen as you wish it would, but rather wish that everything happens as it actually will — then your life will flow well.

• Individuals should cultivate a sense of detachment from external events and focus instead on their own inner state on oachieve a greater sense of peace and equanimity.• Our emotions and reactions should not be dictated by external events but rather by our own rational judgments.• Pursuit of external things such as wealth, power, or pleasure can never bring lasting happiness, as they are ultimately outside of our control and subject to change.

4. Detachment from External Events

• Emotions are an important aspect of human experience but it can be a source of great distress and can lead us astray from the path of virtue.• Emotions are a result of our judgments about events and situations, rather than the events themselves.• By cultivating a rational mindset and focusing on what is within our control, we develop greater emotional resilience and equanimity. • Negative visualization or imagining the worst-case scenarios: By contemplating the worst possible outcomes, we can prepare ourselves mentally and emotionally for adversity and develop greater emotional resilience.

5. Control of Emotions

Keep this thought handy when you feel a fit of rage coming on–it isn’t manly to be enraged. Rather, gentleness and civility are more human, and therefore manlier. A real man doesn’t give way to anger and discontent, and such a person has strength, courage, and endurance–unlike the angry and complaining. The nearer a man comes to a calm mind, the closer he is to strength.

• Everything in the natural world was interconnected, and that our own lives were part of this interconnected web which includes acceptance of cycles of life and death, thus we should not resist or try to control them.• We should view ourselves as citizens of the world, rather than just members of our own community or society.• By recognizing our connection to all living things, we could cultivate a sense of empathy and compassion for others and work towards the common good.

At its core, Stoicism teaches that the ultimate goal of life is to achieve a state of tranquility and freedom from suffering. They may have salt, sugar, and fat on their side — but we — ultimately have the power to make choice. After all, we decide what to buy. We choose how much to eat.

In the 1950s, the TV made its debut, and more women were getting jobs that gave them less time to cook meals for families.That’s where the processed food is commercialized. Home economics teachers tought kids growing up how to make these meals.There was no dependency on processed foods since kids could as well make their meals. It got instant success, garnering enough support to oust home–cooked meals, thanks to the presence of sugar, fat, and salt.

Don't underestimate the amount of sugar in whatever you eat; there might be hidden amounts lurking.

Know Your Sugar

We may have an insatiable hunger for sugar, but we have a limit — a preprogrammed upper limit for when we've had too much sugar. So even though we can't help ourselves, we literally cannot have too much.Guess who knows this convenient piece of information? The processed foods companies, of course.

High Sugar = Severe Health

There are products that don't even need sugars but have them anyway. This means, even if you avoid the obvious processed foods or drinks with sugar, your bowl of pasta might contain even more sugar.Even in pasta sauce, after tomatoes, the main ingredient is sugar. These odd combinations are wrong and immoral; sugar has no place in specific meal options.Did you know? The average tomato paste contains at least 12 grams of sugar; that's about six cubes of sugar.

Sugar Is Everywhere

If sugar is the methamphetamine of processed food ingredients, with its high–speed, blunt assault on our brains, then fat is the opiate, a smooth operator whose effects are less obvious but no less powerful.

Research showed that cereals contained insane amounts of sugar, which caused widespread tooth decay (in children) and risk of diabetes (in adult).In the 1970s, Americans were plagued with staggering cases of health troubles directly linked to sales of processed foods and quick meals.Surprisingly enough, these concerns and studies didn't deter the sales nor the demand, for that matter.Even though people knew these meals were unhealthy and were the leading cause of most life–threatening conditions that were plaguing them, they still purchased well–packaged poisons.

Too Much Sugar, We Don’t Care

Fat had two times the amount of calories sugar would. That's a lot of calories considering we can't taste or tell when fat is too much. We can't taste it when it's alongside sugar or tell when it's in excess.This glitch meant that these processed food companies could put a ridiculous amount of it into the foods, and we'd not even notice it.

Fat Is Another One

Sugar and fat work hand in hand to deliver the consumer with potential health risks in tasty snacks.Fat makes the processed foods last longer on the shelf, meaning you'd have more than enough time to eventually purchase them, while the sugar makes it pleasurable to eat more and more of the unhealthy cuisine.

So how come we eat healthily but still add excess weight and turn out like those who indulge in unhealthy meals?Two foods have been at the helm of this debacle; milk and cheese.Milk and cheese is quite fatty in its original production recipe, but then when it's processed cheese, it contains more fat.

With the increase in sugars in the meals, the government moved to regulate the amounts, causing the consumers to complain and demand things go back to normal.The regulatory bodies try their best, but you must be willing to take responsibility for your well–being and self–regulate your intake of processed foods.

Salt isn’t entirely harmless. It has an essential mineral for the human body; sodium.But an increase of sodium in the blood causes the blood to lose its thickness and move much quicker.This condition can deteriorate to a much worse condition known as hypertension.

What About Salt?

Processed foods contained at least double the daily required (safe) amount of salt in the average canned or packaged processed food.Was this an intentional attempt to kill the consumers? Certainly not; so why was there so much salt in these foods?They taste better with salt in them, so the more, the merrier. But that's not the only reason. The real reason is the same as that of excess fat; shelf life.
