The 7 Hermetic Principles

“THE ALL IS MIND; The Universe is Mental.”This Principle embodies the truth that "All is Mind." It explains that THE ALL (which is the Substantial Reality underlying all the outward manifestations and appearances which we know under the terms of “The Material Universe”; the “Phenomena of Life”; “Matter”; “Energy”; and, in short, all that is apparent to our material senses) is SPIRIT which in itself is UNKNOWABLE and UNDEFINABLE, but which may be considered and thought of as AN UNIVERSAL, INFINITE, LIVING MIND.

1. The Principle of Mentalism

“As above, so below; as below, so above.”This Principle embodies the truth that there is always a Correspondence between the laws and phenomena of the various planes of Being and Life. […] And the grasping of this Principle gives one the means of solving many a dark paradox, and hidden secret of Nature. […] Just as a knowledge of the Principles of Geometry enables man to measure distant suns and their movements, while seated in his observatory, so a knowledge of the Principle of Correspondence enables Man to reason intelligently from the Known to the Unknown.

2. The Principle of Correspondence

“Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates.”This Principle explains that the differences between different manifestations of Matter, Energy, Mind, and even Spirit, result largely from varying rates of Vibration. From THE ALL, which is Pure Spirit, down to the grossest form of Matter, all is in vibration - the higher the vibration, the higher the position in the scale. The vibration of Spirit is at such an infinite rate of intensity and rapidity that it is practically at rest - just as a rapidly moving wheel seems to be motionless.

3. The Principle of Vibration

“Everything is Dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes meet; all truths are but half-truths; all paradoxes may be reconciled.”An understanding of the Principle will enable one to change his own Polarity, as well as that of others, if he will devote the time and study necessary to master the art.

4. The Principle of Polarity

“Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides; all things rise and fall; the pendulum-swing manifests in everything; the measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left; rhythm compensates.”There is always an action and a reaction; an advance and a retreat; a rising and a sinking. This is in the affairs of the Universe, suns, worlds, men, animals, mind, energy, and matter. This law is manifest in the creation and destruction of worlds; in the rise and fall of nations; in the life of all things; and finally in the mental states of Man.

5. The Principle of Rhythm

“Every Cause has its Effect; every Effect has its Cause; everything happens according to Law; Chance is but a name for Law not recognized; there are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the Law.”The masses of people are carried along, obedient to environment; the wills and desires of others stronger than themselves; heredity; suggestion; and other outward causes moving them about like pawns on the Chessboard of Life.

“Gender is in everything; everything has its Masculine and Feminine Principles; Gender manifests on all planes.”This is true not only of the Physical Plane, but of the Mental and even the Spiritual Planes […] No creation, physical, mental or spiritual, is possible without this Principle […] The Principle of Gender works ever in the direction of generation, regeneration, and creation. Everything, and every person, contains the two Elements or Principles, or this great Principle, within it, him or her. Every Male thing has the Female Element also; every Female contains also the Male Principle.

The Kybalion Hermetic Philosophy, originally published by the Yogi Publication Society in 1908 by a person or persons under the pseudonym of "the Three Initiates", is a book claiming to be the essence of the teachings of Hermes Trismegistus. Its philosophies, in conjunction with others, have become founding pillars within the New Thought movement of the early 1910s. The book early on makes the claim that it makes its appearance in one's life when the time is appropriate and includes axioms and insights similar to those found in the Book of Proverbs.

Being judgmental is a behaviour that we have all engaged in at some point or another. But there’s a difference between being judgmental and being opinionated, making observations, or being biased.Judgmental behaviour typically involves appraising something like a situation, person, or action with a critical attitude. A person often does this in a condemning and fault-finding way using their subjective (likely moralistic) point of view and set of values.

Being Judgemental

This can affect your work in a negative way, likely impacting team and interpersonal dynamics. For instance, you may find yourself frequently assigning values to your colleagues using words such as: better than, right, wrong, lazy, or unambitious. There are consequences to taking this hypercritical approach to others who don’t meet your standards.

The Effect Of Judging Everyone

Being judgmental often comes with giving your point of view supremacy over the values and views of others. The risk of being this narrow-minded could result in being less likely to see other colleagues’ perspectives as being relevant or important. Thinking that your way is the only way could also hinder your ability to gain potentially great insights or learnings from those operating outside your value system. Consequently, you may be impacting your own productivity, learning, and growth by not allowing yourself the exposure to a diversity of opinions, fresh ideas, and input from others.

The Problem Magnifies: The Risk Of Being Insular

Passing judgment often implies making a decision before considering all the facts. This may also impact your willingness to look at information objectively or make an attempt to comprehend the full picture.

Jumping To Conclusions

Judgmental people have a tendency to evaluate things as either right or wrong, black or white. This blanket assessment, aligned with the first two points, makes them paint things with one brush instead of appreciating that some things are multifaceted. <a href="https://www.pomona.edu/news/2016/10/12-%E2%80%98black-and-white%E2%80%99-thinking-changes-how-you-feel">Making conclusive judgments—</a>particularly about people, behaviours, or options without considering grey areas, may limit your perceptions and keep you from taking a win-win approach that has validity and value.

It's Not Just A Win Or Lose Situation

Judgmental people often make their colleagues feel shame and indignity about their choices, values, approaches to work or general behaviour. This may result in people not wanting to be around you or to build a relationship with you that fosters teamwork and workplace dynamics.

Avoiding Being Judgemental

If you find yourself classifying someone’s behaviour, actions, or values using hypercritical words like lazy, dishonest, or stupid, take a step back and ask yourself, “Is my perception of this situation based on a full view of the picture?” Or, “Am I imposing my own values here and what alternate explanation is there for this behaviour?”

Avoiding Loaded Words

Putting yourself in someone’s shoes is a great remedy for judgmental behaviour. It is quite common to feel a sense of superiority when looking from the outside: “If that was me, I would have made a better decision.” Or, “I would never have allowed this project to fall behind.” It may be that faced with the same circumstances, you would have done exactly what you are judging someone else for doing. If you put yourself in that person’s situation and experience what they experienced, you may reevaluate your approach.

Being Empathetic

If a person behaves in a manner that is questionable or that you disapprove of, the tendency is to think it relates to a <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/real-men-dont-write-blogs/201406/why-we-dont-give-each-other-break">personality flaw</a> rather than the situation. This so-called <a href="https://ethicsunwrapped.utexas.edu/glossary/fundamental-attribution-error">fundamental attribution error</a> is the propensity for people to overemphasize personal characteristics and ignore situational factors when they’re judging others’ behaviour.Before generalizing, take a minute to consider the situational factors that might have played a role.

The Person Is Different From The Action

Judgmental behaviour doesn’t only affect those who are judged. When you place supremacy on your value system, you can hinder your own progress and productivity.If you keep judging others with a critical attitude, expect the same to be done to you.

People have been practising mindfulness for thousands of years. Mindfulness was popularised in the East by religious and spiritual institutions. The popularity of mindfulness in the West is rooted in Buddhist and Hindu traditions and can be traced to particular people and secular institutions.

The History of Mindfulness

Hinduism is widely considered to be the oldest religion in the world. It initially arose as a synthesis of many religious traditions around the historical region that now makes up India. Then, in the 1800s, British writers started calling Vedic traditions Hinduism. The earliest traditions, which have since been incorporated into Hinduism, arose more than 4,000 years ago in the Indus Valley- now Pakistan. These religious traditions continued to develop in Vedic writings 2,500-3,500 years ago, including rituals and the worship of gods common to modern-day Hinduism.

A Brief History of Hinduism

Buddhism was founded around 400-500 B.C.E. by Siddhartha Gautama, who became referred to as the Buddha. Since the Buddha's lifetime, it has split into several different traditions, including Theravada Buddhism and Zen Buddhism. Buddhism and Hinduism share many commonalities. One is they're both concerned with the concept of dharma - a way of life that is in harmony with the universe's natural order. Mindfulness (Sati) is considered to be the first step towards enlightenment.

A Short History of Buddhism

Some mindfulness meditation practices, such as the body scan, are very similar to yoga as they both involve awareness of one’s body. The origin of yoga coincides with the origin of Hinduism, and the recent rise of yoga’s popularity in the West coincides with the rise of mindfulness. This underscores the intertwined nature of Buddhism, Hinduism, mindfulness, and yoga.

How Mindfulness Relates to Yoga

Jon Kabat-Zinn was the biggest influence on bringing mindfulness from the East to the West. Kabat-Zinn founded the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and the Oasis Institute for Mindfulness-Based Professional Education and Training. Here, he developed his Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program. Kabat-Zinn learned about and studied mindfulness under several Buddhist teachers, including Thich Nhat Hanh, which gave him an Eastern foundation in mindfulness that he integrated with Western science.

How Mindfulness Moved From East to West

Mindfulness plays an important role in the greater field of psychology and positive psychology. Mindfulness has become a tool for any practitioner’s toolbox. History of Mindfulness: From East to West and Religion to Science

The most distinguishing feature of this Japanese school of the Buddha-Way is its contention that wisdom, accompanied by compassion, is expressed in the everyday lifeworld when associating with one’s self, other people, and nature.The Zen practitioner is required to embody freedom expressive of the original human nature, called “buddha-nature.”

Nondiscriminatory wisdom

Zen maintains a stance of “not one” and “not two,” that is “a position-less position.”<ul><li>“not two” means negating the dualistic stance that divides the whole into two parts.</li><li>“not one” means negating the non-dualistic stance occurring when the Zen practitioner dwells in the whole as one, while suspending judgment in meditation. </li><li>the free, bilateral movement between “not one” and “not two” characterises Zen’s achievement of a personhood with a third perspective that cannot, however, be confined to either dualism or non-dualism, neither “not one” nor “not two”.</li></ul>

Dualism or non-dualism

Zen recommends that its practitioner follow a three-step procedure: adjusting one’s body, breathing and mind.To adjust the mind  means that the practitioner consciously moves to enter a state of meditation. He learns to disengage him- or herself from the concerns of daily life by the immobile bodily posture and the breathing exercise.Meditation trains one to sit face-to-face with one’s self, while creating a psychological isolation from the external world.This mechanism is the same as when one has a dream at night when the level of consciousness is lowered.

No-mind does not mean:<ul><li> a mindless state,</li><li>that there is no mind</li></ul>No mind means that there is no conscious activity of the mind that is associated with ego-consciousness.No-mind is a free mind that is not delimited by ideas, desires, and images.

<ul><li>A psychosomatic disorder is a condition where observed physical symptoms don’t have medical explanations.</li><li>These symptoms are instead attributed to psychological things (e.g., stress, emotions, and personality).</li><li>Many times, we just haven't found medical explanations for them yet.</li><li>However, because we are beginning to find a medical explanation for why anorexia develops (particularly genetics and neurochemical dysfunction), we can't call it a purely psychosomatic condition.</li></ul>
