Therefore, authenticity includes more than the frank expression of what comes to mind. After all, an individual’s true self consists of many changing thoughts, feelings, and identities, some of which he or she may not be conscious of or understand. In fact, it is even possible to be authentically dishonest, meaning to tell lies in a way that feels true to oneself.

In general, authenticity requires: <ol><li>Awareness of one’s inner states. </li><li>Truthful expression and communication of these states. </li></ol>But, as noted above, we are not always honest with ourselves. In fact, self-deception is a major obstacle to becoming aware of inner states and communicating them to others. For instance, we often try to hold on to unrealistically positive self-beliefs, which requires interpreting new information in ways that are biased in favor of making us feel good.

The Difficulties Of Being Authentic And Honest

Since others do not have access to our inner states—only we do, and in a limited way—they cannot tell with certainty whether we are being authentic. Therefore, they rely on mental shortcuts and rules-of-thumb called heuristics. Heuristics, in turn, are influenced by factors such as context. Specifically, context determines whether self-expression may be perceived as genuine or fake.

Can People Even Tell That We Are Being Authentic?

Cultural context: In China, describing one’s likes only is associated with being genuine, whereas in Germany this is true of describing both likes and dislikes . Political context: A dishonest political leader is more likely to be seen as authentic by a voter if the two share a constituency and if the voter feels the political system is unlawful. Personal ideology: Politically incorrect language is considered more authentic when it aligns with an observer’s own ideology and prejudices.

How Context Determines Authenticity: Examples

In order to make sense of the complex relationship between being truthful and genuine, we need to understand a few additional terms: <ul><li>Other- and self-concept: These terms refer to the mental image of another person or one’s self. </li><li>Coherence : Coherence means that an individual’s behavior makes sense, is predictable, and seems consistent with what we know about them. </li></ul>

Self-Concept And Coherence

We are more likely to feel authentic when our self-concept is coherent. Similarly, a stranger’s behavior appears genuine if our mental image of them is coherent. Therefore, it is only when honesty boosts coherence that it predicts authenticity. Specifically, high authenticity results from a combination of both high honesty and high coherence.

Morality matters too. When dishonesty is perceived as moral (e.g., prosocial lies rather than hypocrisy), the resultant behavior seems more genuine. In general, to be interpreted as authentic, deception must be motivated by benevolence, loyalty, or other prosocial personal values (e.g., protecting someone from harm). When this is the case, deception is seen as internally motivated and coherent with the person’s self-concept.

Eliminating Guilt, Shame, Regret, And Worry - Key Points

It has been said that we are living in an epidemic of social alienation and <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/depression">depression </a>. Cognitive psychologists tell us that depression is often a result of how we interpret the world around us and the role we play in that world. Feelings of guilt, regret, and shame can fuel the fires of depression and further contribute to social withdrawal and alienation. Worry, that is, repetitive concern or rumination, then acts as a catalyst. It may be that a better understanding of what these feelings are and their relationship to one another will help you better control them and even free you from their burden.

If you read the <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/self-help">self-help </a>literature, you will find potentially confusing discussions of guilt, regret, and shame. It seems we have fallen prey to accepting Humpty Dumpty’s assertion “When I use a word…it means just what I choose it to mean neither more nor less.” To clarify the confusion surrounding guilt, regret, and shame, let’s simply rely on denotation to help us clarify and differentiate.

Understanding Guilt, Regret, and Shame

Guilt, simply said, is a belief in culpability or responsibility for some perceived offense or wrongdoing. There are largely four types of guilt: <ol><li>Guilt for doing something you should not have </li><li>Guilt for not doing something you should have </li><li>Guilt by association </li><li><a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/guilt">Survivor's guilt </a>(sometimes experienced by accident survivors, survivors of violence, and military members). </li> </ol>

A frequent corollary of guilt is regret. Frankly, regret can be a natural and healthy response to guilt. Regret involves accepting responsibility for some perceived offense or wrongdoing and being remorseful about it. It is often related to thoughts of contrition or repentance and it often leads to subsequent corrective actions and even preventive actions in the future. So regret is not necessarily a bad thing, unless it leads to shame.

Shame is the angst and distress often associated with guilt. It involves <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/embarrassment">humiliation </a>, a loss of honor or respect. Shame can take <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/stress">stressful </a>regret and turn it into a disaster. Shame is not healthy. It serves no useful purpose.

In the early 1990s, Kenneth Smith and I, as well as others, began a research project that has now spanned 30 years. Our initial goal was to discover what factors in the workplace contributed most to psychological <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/burnout">burnout </a>and stress-related physical illness. Having collected and analyzed survey data over the course of decades, and using statistical methods such as factor analysis and structural equation modeling, we made a startling discovery.

Worry

We learned that worry (repetitive concern) was a significantly toxic psychological process that was the essence of what we called stress, and was a major determinant of burnout (personal exhaustion). Worry predicted psychological disorders and physical illness. If shame can take regret and turn it into a disaster, worry supercharges that psychological disaster and turns it into a catastrophe, often relentlessly.

In 1597, Sir Francis Bacon wrote in his Meditationes Sacrae that knowledge itself is power. It influences. It empowers. So how can information help release guilt, regret, shame, and worry? Understand that guilt, regret, shame, and worry are not four independent stressors, but are often interrelated. They represent a virtual linear cascade that begins with guilt and, like a musical crescendo, builds in intensity and duration, culminating in shame and worry.

Marco Brambilla et al. (2019) examined the impact of different types of information about personality and character on the making and updating of first impressions. They note that competence, sociability, and morality impact impression formation differently, but morality establishes the primary basis for the way we evaluate other people.

First Impressions Depend On Competence, Sociability And Morality

Investigating whether we update our impressions of others by all three factors equally, the researchers had study participants revise their impressions of a person upon receiving new and inconsistent information in all three realms. They found that information about morality was viewed as more revealing of interpersonal intentions, causing a greater change in impression than when presented with new information about competence or sociability.

But Morality Beats Competence And Sociability

Regarding negative impressions, the researchers found that immoral people are viewed more negatively than people who are unsociable. Negative impressions, however, improved more significantly when positive information about morality, versus sociability, was added to previous negative qualities. They also noted that in contrast, impressions about someone deteriorated when subjects who had originally learned about positive qualities subsequently learned about negative moral (versus sociability) qualities.
